Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the prevalence of caries and cariogenic risk of diet in preschool children, with the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices of their mothers about oral health in children at the Laredo District Hospital. Material and methods: The sample consisted of 125 mothers and their respective children. The prevalence of caries and the cariogenic risk of the diet of the children were evaluated. The level of knowledge, attitudes and practices on oral health of mothers was measured. The analysis and interpretation of the data was done with Chi square test, and 95% confidence. Results: A caries prevalence of 92%, a ceo-d index of 4.28 and a Cariogenic risk of the Moderate Diet 55.2% were found. Regarding mothers, 56.0% had good knowledge, 78.4% had adequate attitudes and poor practices in 70.4%. When relating the prevalence of caries, a statistically significant relationship was found with the level of knowledge (p <0.05) and highly significant relationship with the level of practices (p <0.01). Conclusion: It is concluded that there is a direct association between the prevalence of caries and the level of knowledge and practices, but there is no association with attitudes and cariogenic risk of diet.
