Abstract
This thesis develops an analysis of Hermann Hesse's masterpiece, Demian, focusing on the main character, Emil Sinclair, as a vehicle for autofiction. This work explores how Hesse, through Sinclair, intertwines elements of his own life into the narrative, creating a literary canvas where reality and fiction intriguingly converge. The study is based on a thorough review of Hesse's work and the identification of parallels between the author's life and the protagonist's evolution. Sinclair's experiences, from his youth to his search for identity, are carefully examined, establishing connections with events and emotions that Hesse himself experienced in his own life. The methodology combines literary and contextual analysis, unraveling layers of meaning in Demian to reveal how Hesse uses autofiction as a means to explore philosophical and spiritual questions. It also highlights the similarities and differences between the author's autobiographical reality and the fiction he created, deepening the understanding of identity and self-reflection. The results reveal an intersection between Hermann Hesse's life and Emil Sinclair's odyssey. This research contributes to the understanding of autofiction as a literary tool and offers a new perspective to appreciate Hesse's mastery in creating narrative worlds rich in meaning.
