Abstract
Abstract The present research project titled "Non-alcoholic fatty liver as a factor associated with the severity of COVID-19 at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo" aims to determine if the presence of nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) is associated with greater severity of the COVID-19 in patients treated at said hospital during the period from March 2020 to February 2022. This observational and retrospective study seeks to evaluate the prevalence of NAFLD in patients with severe and non-severe COVID-19, and compare the probability of hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and mortality among patients with and without NAFLD. The author of the project is Dr. Julio Eduardo De Velasco Correa, resident doctor of Internal Medicine at the National University of Trujillo, advised by Dr. Regina Aquino Salverredy, professor at the same university. The study will be carried out at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo and at the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of Trujillo, with a duration of five months, from January to May 2024. The study is justified by the need to better understand how NAFLD, a common liver condition, can influence the severity of COVID-19, especially considering the high prevalence of both conditions and their impact on public health. The results could allow us to identify patients with a higher risk of severe complications, thus improving management and treatment strategies. This project has the potential to significantly contribute to scientific and clinical knowledge on the interaction between NAFLD and COVID-19, setting precedents for future studies and improving patient care in the context of pandemics.
