Abstract
The present research aims to conduct an Environmental Economic Valuation of the Private Conservation Area "El Cañoncillo" Natural Forest, an important protected area located in the La Libertad region. The study focuses on assessing the monetary value of the ecosystem services provided by this forest, in order to raise awareness among society and authorities about its significance and promote effective conservation measures. Firstly, a detailed analysis was carried out on the attributes and characteristics of El Cañoncillo Forest, including its extent, floristic composition, fauna, and its role in climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation, among other ecosystem services. Information was gathered from previous studies, historical records, and in-situ sampling techniques. Subsequently, various economic valuation methods were applied, such as Replacement Cost, Direct Use Value (recreation, tourism, sustainable resource harvesting), and Indirect Use Value (conservation of endangered species, flood protection, among others). Additionally, a survey was conducted among local inhabitants and forest users to assess their perception and willingness to pay for the conservation of the area. The survey results provided valuable information about the cultural and social importance of the forest for the community. These approaches allowed estimating the total economic value of the forest, which amounted to S/. 913,550.49 per hectare, equivalent to $250,975.41 per hectare (Two hundred fifty thousand nine hundred seventy-five dollars and forty-one cents per hectare). El Cañoncillo Forest holds a considerable economic value, significantly surpassing the costs associated with its conservation. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the local community deeply values this natural resource and is willing to support its protection.
