Abstract
The aim of this research was to determine the effect of luminous intensity on the weight increase, total body length and displacement speed of Oreochromis niloticus "tilapia". The fish were installed in aquariums and arranged in separate environments, one group was exposed to low intensity of permanent light, 0.77 ± 0.32 lux and another group, photoperiod (14 hours of light / 10 hours of darkness), light intensity of 2025 ± 405.48 lux at noon. The fish were bred at constant temperature and oxygenation with eating in equal amounts and timetable in both treatments. After 30 days, the total body weight averages were estimated at 6.40 ± 2.98 g, total body length at 6.85 ± 1.48 cm and displacement speed at 7.15 ± 0.85 cm/s in the treatment with low luminous intensity of 0.77 ± 0.32 lux and the averages of the total body weight in 11.90 ± 2.69 g, total body length in 8.20 ± 1.40 cm and displacement speed in 4.77 ± 0.14 cm/s in fish exposed to photoperiod. We determined significant differences in weight and body length, and speed of displacement due to light, at low intensity of permanent light and photoperiod. Fish at low luminous intensity permanent reduce weight gain and increase the sensitivity to noise that is reflected in the speed of movement.
