Abstract
Objective: The objective of this experimental study was to determine the galvanic corrosion of dental amalgam as a result of the interaction with steel-chromium crowns and chromium cobalt, in vitro. Materials and Methods: Galvanic systems were distributed in 3 groups: steel-chromium/amalgam, chromium-cobalt/amalgam and dental piece / amalgam. Each week the weight of each element (Amalgam, chrome-steel, chromium-cobalt and tooth without restoration) of each system was measured to determine galvanic corrosion by mass loss method, this procedure was performed once a week for 4 weeks. Results: Galvanic corrosion values of 891.57 mdd ± 42.51, 742.83 mdd ± 36.97, 616.76 mdd ± 34.70 and 515.08 mdd ± 25.57, during the first, second, third and fourth week respectively; By interacting dental amalgam in a system with chrome-steel crowns. Galvanic corrosion values of 785.23 mdd ± 63.53, 605.50 mdd ± 46.91, 449.64 mdd ± 46.83 and 313.39 mdd ± 48.15, during the first, second, third and fourth week respectively; when interacting dental amalgam in a chromium-cobalt system. Galvanic corrosion values of 244.68 mdd ± 17.44, 182.79 mdd ± 12.62, 143.34 mdd ± 9.76 and 116.43 mdd ± 12.32, during the first, second, third and fourth week respectively; By interacting the dental amalgam with a healthy dental piece Conclusions: The galvanic corrosion of dental amalgam produced by the interaction with steel-chromium was higher during the first one with a value of 891.57 mdd ± 42.51, which decreased to a value of 515.08 mdd ± 25.57 during the fourth week. While the galvanic corrosion of dental amalgam resulting from the interaction with chromium-cobalt was higher during the first one with a value of 785.23 mdd ± 63.53, which decreased to a value of 313.39 mdd ± 48.15 during the fourth week. Finally, the galvanic corrosion of the dental amalgam produced by the interaction with chromium-cobalt was higher during the first one with a value of 244.68 mdd ± 17.44, which decreased to a value of 116.43 mdd ± 12.32 during the fourth week
