Abstract
Patients in intensive care units are often surrounded by machines that hinder human interaction, and nurses are often concerned about the use of hard and soft-hard technologies, breaking the link with soft technologies that make them routine, creating attitudes that predispose nurses to distance themselves from patients. The objective was to understand the ways of caring in the intensive care units of a public hospital. The theoretical support was based on the concepts of care from the perspective of a study on Collective Health by Emerson Elias Merhy. It is a qualitative study of participatory action, framed in Paulo Freire's theory of problematization or conscientization, with the participation of 18 nurses. The following categories emerged: autonomy in the function performed; knowledge and practices involved in caregiving acts; moments of speaking, listening and interpreting; strengthening the linkage between actors/subjects for the production of care; moments of trust and hope; deviation in care/lines of flight. The conclusion was that there was a need to create spaces for problematizing and reflecting on practice, thus strengthening the ongoing health education to regulate and achieve changes towards the empowerment of nursing professionals in soft technologies as articulators of other technological configurations.
