Abstract
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil of Schinus molle L. "molle" and to evaluate its anxiolytic effect on Mus musculus Balb/c. The essential oil from the leaves was obtained by steam distillation, and its composition was determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The essential oil presented physicochemical and organoleptic parameters within the values established in the pharmacopoeias, with a yield of 0.5 ± 0.05 % w/v. 14 chemical compounds were identified by GC-MS, the major components being α-phellandrene, α- pinene and β-myrcene. The essential oil of Schinus molle L, administered at doses of 12.5 mg/kg and 25 mg/kg, showed a significant anxiolytic effect in the elevated plus maze model, with greater effectiveness observed at the dose of 25 mg/kg with statistically significant differences.
