Abstract
El objetivo de la presente revisión fue determinar el estado del arte de las principales características y propiedades funcionales de Passiflora edulis “Maracuyá”; mediante la recopilación de información sobre las investigaciones relacionadas a esta fruta; ya que muchas de ellas son especificas y tratan respecto a una porción del producto o respecto a un beneficio en particular, de tal manera que pueda servir de base para futuras investigaciones. Passiflora edulis; destaca por su alto contenido en sustancias funcionales como carotenoides y vitamina C, los cuales actúan como antioxidantes previniendo el envejecimiento celular, protegiendo el organismo frente a los radicales libres, la aparición de cáncer y reducen las probabilidades de ataques cardíacos. Su consumo inhibe el crecimiento de bacterias dañinas para el organismo, favorece al sistema inmunitario, mejora la visión, previene enfermedades vasculares al reducir la tensión arterial, y es empleada en tratamientos contra alergias como el asma o la sinusitis, además de combatir el estreñimiento por sus propiedades laxantes y su alto contenido de agua. Las distintas investigaciones en Pasiflora edulis están dirigidas hacia el estudio de las diversas características y propiedades funcionales de las semillas, cáscara, pulpa y hojas.
Description
The objective of this review was to determine the state of the art of the main features and functional properties of Passiflora edulis "Passion Fruit"; by collecting information on research related to this fruit; since many of them are specific and try respect to a portion of the product or in respect of a particular benefit, so that could be the basis for future research. Passiflora edulis; It features a high content of functional substances such as carotenoids and vitamin C, which act as antioxidants preventing cellular aging, protecting the body against free radicals, cancer development and reduce the likelihood of heart attacks. Its use inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria to the body, promotes the immune system, improve vision, prevent vascular disease by lowering blood pressure, and is used in treatments against allergies such as asthma or sinusitis, in addition to combat constipation laxative properties and high water content. The Passiflora edulis different investigations are directed towards the study of the various characteristics and functional properties of the seeds, peel, pulp and leaves.
