El estudio se basa en la caracterización del relave Santa Catalina, inicialmente se realizó el análisis granulométrico para obtener un pasante de 60% malla #200 y un pasante de 95% malla #400. Para la caracterización de composición química por elementos y compuestos se aplicó las técnicas Espectrometría de Emisión Óptica (ICP-OES), Microscopio electrónico de barrido (MEB-SEM) y Difracción de rayos X (DRX). El contenido de oro y polimetálicos se determinó mediante absorción atómica. El resultado del análisis granulométrico se obtuvo 23.85% es pasante la malla #200, por lo que se hizo remolienda para obtener un pasante 60% malla #200 y 95% malla #400. El análisis geoquímico se obtuvo: 29.61 %Fe, 11.32 %Si, 2.401 g/t Au, 62.1 g/t Ag, 3554 ppm Cu, 2903 ppm Pb, 7575 ppm Zn, 32.89 % S. Del análisis mineralógico mediante difracción de rayos X, para 60% pasante la malla #200 se obtuvo: sílice 48.70% (SiO2), pirita 35.23% (FeS2), pirofilita 5.18 % (Al2Si4O10(OH)2, Melanterita 4.67% (Fe(SO4)(H2O)7 moscovita 4.15% KAl2((Si3Al)O10(OH)2) y caolinita 2.07% (Al2Si2O5(OH)4); y para 95% malla #400, se obtuvo: 37.36% (SiO2), pirita 40.23% (FeS2), pirofilita 5.17 % (Al2Si4O10(OH)2, Melanterita 7.47% (Fe(SO4)(H2O)7 y moscovita 4.02% KAl2((Si3Al)O10(OH)2). Se concluye que es un mineral que contiene alto porcentaje de pirita y sílice, además de contenido de oro y plata en menor cantidad.
