Abstract
Maternal anemia is a major public health problem due to its high prevalence in the world, with higher rates in developing countries such as Peru, where almost a third of pregnant women suffer from it; The main cause being Iron deficiency. During pregnancy, iron needs increase as a result of the growth of the fetus, increase in the mass of erythrocytes, the placenta, maternal tissues and the increase in plasma volume; Therefore, the pregnant woman needs to have adequate hemoglobin levels. Various studies have been documented worldwide pointing out the possible complications of anemia, both maternal and perinatal; which include: preterm labor, low birth weight and small for gestational age among others; which tend to increase morbidity and mortality rates in the perinatal period, with the publication of such information being scarce in our environment, which will allow the implementation of health policies, aimed at the identification, prevention and timely treatment of anemia in women in pregnant woman, in order to reduce its prevalence.
