Abstract
ABSTRACT This research was done with the aim of determine the antibiotic sensitivity and antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli in urine cultures performed in a clinical laboratory, between march-december of 2020. For this reason, the records of urine cultures and antibiograms of the clinical laboratory, of the periodo of time mentioned, were reviewed; the data from the antibiograms were managed taking into account the indications of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) for susceptibility reports. Escherichia coli isolates were found to have more resistance to sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (in the 62,75% of cases), to ampicilin (54,84%), to levofloxacin (47,17%), ciprofloxacin (46,55%) and to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (43,75%); in counterpart, the highest susceptibility rate were for: ertapenem (98%), amikacin (96,08%), nitrofurantoin (89,58%) and gentamicin (78%). This results must help to guide the empirical treatment of the patients.
