Abstract
The present work of professional sufficiency entitled: "Recreational reading to improve reading comprehension in elementary school students", aims to demonstrate that the application of the recreational reading strategy allows students to feel pleasure in reading, stimulates creativity and imagination that will allow them to have fun, recreate and improve their reading comprehension reaching an outstanding level when understanding the texts they read. From a theoretical point of view, the work is based on constructivist theory, which through psychopedagogues supports that students can build their own learning based on what they already know and giving them new alternatives so that they are encouraged to read for pleasure. The relationship between variables such as recreational reading and reading comprehension is thus exposed. Therefore, when applying the strategy in different learning sessions, it was concluded that there was a significant improvement in the comprehension of texts for students in the second grade of primary school, showing that they improved when answering questions at different levels of reading comprehension, being more critics by stating an idea regarding the text, thus increasing interest in reading and significantly understanding a text.
