dc.descriptionOBJECTIVE: To know the antibacterial effect in vitro of the ethanolic extract of leaves of Smallanthus sonchifolius "Yacón" on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An experimental study was carried out that evaluated the antibacterial effect in vitro of 3 concentrations (50%, 75% and 100%) of the ethanolic extract of leaves of Smallanthus sonchifolius "Yacón" on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus; using 70 ° GL ethanol as treatment of the control group. The disk diffusion method was used based on the fundamentals described by Kirby-Bauer, recommended in the NCCLS standards for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Tests. The disk diffusion method was applied for the experimental group and the control group. Subsequently the sensitivity was evaluated using the Duraffourd scale. RESULTS: The ethanolic extract of "yacon" leaves has no antibacterial effect on the Escherichia coli strain; but if it has an effect on the Staphylococcus aureus strain, for the 50% and 75% concentrations of the ethanolic extract, a range of "average sensitivity" was found within the "limit sensitivity" range of the Duraffourd scale and for the 100% range". In addition, a statistically significant difference was found with the use of the different concentrations. CONCLUSION: In vitro, the ethanolic extract of leaves of Smallanthus sonchifolius "Yacon" on Escherichia coli showed no antibacterial activity and on Staphylococcus aureus if it showed antibacterial effect in its three concentrations (50%, 75% and 100%).es_PE
dc.description.abstractOBJETIVO: Conocer el efecto antibacteriano in vitro del extracto etanólico de hojas de Smallanthus sonchifolius “Yacón” sobre Escherichia coli y Staphylococcus aureus. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Se realizó un estudio experimental que evaluó el efecto antibacteriano in vitro de 3 concentraciones (50%, 75% y 100%) del extracto etanólico de hojas de Smallanthus sonchifolius “Yacón” sobre Escherichia coli y Staphylococcus aureus; utilizando etanol 70° GL como tratamiento del grupo control. Se utilizó el método de difusión de discos en base a los fundamentos descritos por Kirby-Bauer, recomendados en los estándares NCCLS para Pruebas de Susceptibilidad Antimicrobiana. El método de difusión en discos se aplicó para el grupo experimental y el grupo control. Posteriormente se evaluó la sensibilidad haciendo uso de la escala de Duraffourd. RESULTADOS: El extracto etanólico de hojas de “yacón” no posee efecto antibacteriano sobre la cepa de Escherichia coli; pero si posee efecto en la cepa de Staphylococcus aureus, para las concentraciones de 50% y 75% del extracto etanólico se hallaron dentro del rango de “sensibilidad límite” de la escala de Duraffourd y para la de 100% un rango de “sensibilidad media”. Además se encontró diferencia estadísticamente significativa con el uso de las diferentes concentraciones. CONCLUSIÓN: In vitro, el extracto etanólico de hojas de Smallanthus sonchifolius “Yacón” sobre Escherichia coli no mostró actividad antibacteriana y sobre Staphylococcus aureus si mostró efecto antibacteriano en sus tres concentraciones (50%, 75% y 100%).es_PE
