| dc.description | Candidiasis is an opportunistic disease with clinical manifestations ranging from superficial to systemic infections. The increasing incidence and emergence of resistance requires the proposal of new alternatives; in response, the combination of the bioavailability and efficacy of fluconazole with the antifungal potency of the essential oil of Origanum vulgare is presented as a tentative option to the treatment of candidiasis. Objective: To evaluate the synergistic effect of the essential oil of Origanum vulgare and fluconazole against Candida albicans. Methods: The experimental study was carried out under a design "posttest and control group". The target population consisted of Candida albicans strain ATCC 10231 and the number of repetitions for each treatment was 15. Antibiogram testing was used, facing the specimen versus 4 treatments (20μg fluconazole, 40μg fluconazole, 2μL essential oil of Origanum vulgare and set 40μg fluconazole + 2μL essential oil treatment). All the protocol was performed under the criteria of a biosafety level type 1. Results: The inhibition halos in the groups treated with 20μg fluconazole (𝑥̅=6.0mm), 40μg fluconazole (𝑥̅=11.64mm), 2μL oregano´s oil (𝑥̅=81.71mm) and treatment group (𝑥̅=84.98mm) showed significant differences (p = 0.00). The Tukey test shows similarity between the last two groups (p = 0.905), and significantly higher halos to the first two (p = 0.000). | dc.description.abstract | La candidiasis es una enfermedad oportunista, con manifestaciones clínicas que van desde infecciones superficiales hasta sistémicas. La creciente incidencia y aparición de resistencia hace necesaria la propuesta de nuevas alternativas; ante ello, la combinación de la biodisponibilidad y eficacia de fluconazol, con la potencia antimicótica del aceite esencial de Origanum vulgare, se presenta como una opción tentativa para el tratamiento de candidiasis. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto sinérgico del aceite esencial de Origanum vulgare y el fluconazol frente a Candida albicans. Material y método: El estudio experimental se ejecutó bajo un diseño de “posprueba y grupo control”. La población objetivo consistió en Candida albicans cepa ATCC 10231 y el número de repeticiones para cada tratamiento fue de 15. Se utilizó la prueba del antibiograma, enfrentando el espécimen frente a 4 tratamientos (20μg fluconazol, 40μg fluconazol, 2μL aceite esencial de Origanum vulgare y el tratamiento conjunto 40μg de fluconazol+2μL aceite esencial). Resultados: Los halos de inhibición en los grupos tratados con 20μg fluconazol (𝑥̅=6.0mm), 40μg fluconazol (𝑥̅=11.64mm), 2μL aceite de orégano (𝑥̅=81.71mm) y tratamiento conjunto (𝑥̅=84.98mm) muestran diferencias significativas (p=0.00). La prueba de Tukey arroja semejanza entre los dos últimos grupos (p=0.905), además de halos significativamente mayores a los dos primeros (p=0.000).
