Abstract
ABSTRACT The objective of this research work was to determine the effect of the essential oil of the Persea Americana Mill (avocado) leaf on the growth of Streptococcus mutans in vitro. The leaves of the plant were collected in the Cerro Blanco sector, Laredo, Trujillo, La Libertad. To obtain the essential oil, the steam drag method was used; four dilutions of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% were prepared from the essential oil obtained. The effect on bacterial growth was evaluated by the formation of bacterial inhibition halos, using the Kirby Bauer method and a millimeter Vernier as a measuring instrument. The results of the study indicated that the 25% and 50% dilutions of the essential oil did not present significant antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans, however, the 75% and 100% dilution achieved an inhibitory halo of 13.6 mm and 17. 4 mm respectively, and the positive control with 0.12% chlorhexidine obtained 40.7 mm. To determine the minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of avocado essential oil on Streptococcus mutan, the macrodilution method in Brain Heart Infusion broth and sowing on the surface in Trypticase Soy Agar was used, obtaining a result of 37.5% respectively. In conclusion, the essential oil of the Persea Americana Mill leaf at 75% and 100% presented an inhibition of bacterial growth.
