Abstract

The study population consisted of 132 people who make up the elderly program, and the sample of 70 people to whom two questionnaires were applied, the first to determine knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus and the second to measure self-care practice. For the statistical analysis, the Kendall Tau-b test was obtained, reaching the following conclusions: that 82.9% (58) of older adults who have adequate self-care practices, 80.0% (56) have a level of high knowledge and 2.9% (2) medium, in the same way; 17.1% (12) of older adults have inadequate practices, 1.4% (1) have a high level of knowledge, 12.8% (9) medium level and 2.9% (2) low. Therefore, it is evident that the significance value is 0.000, concluding that there is a significant relationship between knowledge and the practice of self-care
